Happy Knitting During Isoluation!
I am in Love!!!!
This wonderful pattern, by KnitWit Designs came out a few weeks ago and is such a happy knit for the times we are in. There are already 129 project on Ravelry as of 2/4/20. That is less then a month since the pattern was released.
The pattern uses worsted weight yarn. I don’t have those kind of colors in that weight but I do have a good collection of Knitpicks Palette. Palette is a fingering weight yarn so I am doubling it and it is working just fine.
The color blocks in the pattern is achieved by using Intarsia. This technique is accomplished by carring different yarn bundles for each of the different color sections. You don’t carry yarn across like you do for stranded knitting. Instead you pick up a new color each time you are going to be knitting with it. Depending on how many colors you have in each row that will dictate how many bundles you have for that row. But, you are only knitting with one color at a time.
Yarn Management and weaving in ends are the two challenges with intarsia. I prefer to manage my different yarns in one of two ways. Either little butterfly bobbins I wind around my hand or just letting the length of yarn hang. The butterflies do tangle some so I only use them for larger blocks of color. The single strands also tangle, but you can just pull them through the mess and they are ready to use. I learned this technique from Kaffe Fassett back in the day. He uses many different colors in a row so butterflies or bobbins could really be an mess to maintain. He also showed us the “private side” of his sweaters. They where not perfect, as you might have thought. He left short tails everywhere. I figure if he didn’t have the “perfect” back of a sweater, it is ok for me to follow his lead.
But, this is a blanket so there is no private sides. At first I was going to make the blanket. The yellow house was my first one so I did tidy up the back. That was as far as that went. I am not going to do that for 81 blocks for a blanket. So I have decided to make a pillow instead and that way I don’t have to worry about the tails. This pillow will be 3X3 or 9 squares. That will be about 14x14” pillow form.
I will probably take it to the knit store I work at, Strands Knitting Studio. There we have the cutest skien called “Teenie Weenie”. They are 50yrds of fingering weight yarns in about 30 colors so they are the perfect yarn for this kind of project.
There is also a way to weave in most of the ends as you go. This technique is making a comeback thanks to Stephen West.
I am thinking of making a wallhanging for my office. I have been looking forever for something for that “Ugly” wall. Since it is a wall hanging I will not have to make the back all perfect either. Only the wall will know!
I am going use aqua, blue, pink, green, with a touch of yellow and white. Our little “beach” house is mostly Aqua and White so it would be so perfect!!
