Washi is the New Duct Tape
I love washi tape. It is perfection on all levels. It comes in so many colors and patterns, it is not expensive and it adds beauty to everything and anything you add it to.
Don't let it's beauty fool you, it is also a workhorse. I am always using it to fix my mistakes in every evolving ways.
Binder Dividers seem to be an issue for me. I have made dividers for 2 different binders and bought them for a third binder. I have been reminded that I have a hard time with numbers and measurements. I seem to be just off a bit most of the time. I measure many times for what ever I am doing, I write things down and I check at least 3 times before I cut. Even with all of that I am off by a bit a lot of the time.
The Case of the Personal Color Crush: I cut these dividers with tabs, a front and back and a picture centered on one side. After cutting the tabs on all four, I found that they were just off. I recut them without tabs. just plane rectangles, I can't mess that up. I used Martha Stewart Tabs, covered them with different washi tapes and sandwiched them between the front and back. The tabs come in colors that really didn't work for me so I used washi tape to cover them and I really love how they turned out.
Case of the Purchased A5 Dividers: After the struggle with the personal dividers I thought I would go the easy route and buy some dividers from an Etsy Seller. I needed custom ones because my Kikki-K housed my Plum Paper planner and so the pages where much wider then regular A5 pages are (why do I have to do everything the hard way?). That meant that I had to give her the measurements. Like always, I checked these measurements several times, I even amended them. But, instead of writing the width was 6 1/2" and wrote 6 1/5" wide. I know right?
So when they got to me they where not wide enough and you could not see the tabs because they were hidden behind the pages. After some swearing and doing something else to distract myself a lightbulb went off.
Once again, washi tape and Martha Stewart tabs to the rescue. This time I added the tabs to the side I was going to punch. I used washi to cover the tabs and to secure the tabs on the back side of the dividers. Then I punched the washi covered tabs and problem solved.
Case of the 3 ring binder: For this binder I thought using file folders from Target would mean very little measuring. Yeah! These did go fast but what I didn't realize is that different file folders from different sets where just slightly a different length. After making them all and laminating them I put them in my binder and they where not only different sizes but some actually stuck out the bottom of the binder. Can you here the words coming out of my mouth at that point?
Now there are two problems. Not only are they different sizes but I had already punched all the holes in them and I now needed to punch them again in different places. So what to do?
Yup you guessed it, I got out matching washi that was on the tabs and covered the holes on both sides of the dividers. That allowed me to re-punch holes and you couldn't see the old holes.
To take care of the different lengths I used a sheet of paper from the binder and centered the sheet over the divider, I clipped it so it wouldn't move, and punched new holes using a single hole punch.
They are still slightly different sizes but you don't really notice now and none of them hang out the bottom of the binder. I have learned that I need to use a template for everything!
I am now a devoted Washi Lover, like I really need a reason. Washi tape is such a pretty useful solution to everything paper related.
What great uses have you found for Washi Tape?
